John Ash and Paul Gotts are both keen photographers and advocates of using handmade books to best show their work – and that of others. They have collaborated on three published books together and are publishing their fourth book, featuring previously unpublished photographers, in early summer 2023. Titled Littoral it has a different feel to the previous three books.

Littoral is based on the theme of the sea and the coast, and includes approximately 35 black and white images from three photographers. By limiting the number of photographers, John and Paul have the opportunity to show more of the photographers’ work. In addition, the book has a narrative threaded through it to produce a cohesive piece of work with which they aim to engage a wider audience. As with their previous books, everyone is giving their time and experience for free, and all proceeds will go to the RNLI.

John and Paul say ‘In terms of contributors the book has attracted three brilliant photographers – Lynn FraserAli Lewis and Fiona McCowan. The work they submitted is of an exceptional standard and after selecting the first cut of images we supplied a hard copy to Jeff Young to provide a narrative weaving together his memories and emotions on viewing them over a couple of weeks. In addition, the book benefits from a foreword written by Jack Lowe’.
